HI vs AI: Who is smarter?
Artificial Intelligence is often seen as one of the reasons many Gen Z workers struggle to find employment. In Indonesia, this has created concern that AI may eventually replace human intelligence. However, the question is not simply whether AI is powerful, but whether it can truly replace the full range of human intelligence.
Human intelligence is not limited to the ability to process numbers, words, and data. Humans possess multiple forms of intelligence, including analytical intelligence, emotional intelligence, practical intelligence, and creative intelligence. These different forms allow people to solve problems, build relationships, adapt to change, and imagine new possibilities.
Four forms of human intelligence
- Analytical intelligence: the ability to work with numbers, words, information, and data.
- Emotional intelligence: the ability to understand people, build relationships, and respond with empathy.
- Practical intelligence: the ability to adapt, respond to change, and make decisions in real-life situations.
- Creative intelligence: the ability to imagine, innovate, and produce ideas that are not always predictable.
AI is strongest in areas related to analytical intelligence. It can process data quickly, recognize patterns, produce logical scenarios, and manage information with speed and accuracy. However, adaptation in human life is not only logical. It is influenced by emotion, imagination, experience, and context.
Why AI cannot fully replace human intelligence
AI can simulate adaptation by generating scenarios from available data, but human adaptation is more personal and complex. People adapt differently because they are shaped by feelings, values, imagination, relationships, and lived experience.
AI can also combine existing elements to create something that appears new. Yet human imagination can be unpredictable, unstructured, and deeply personal. Human creativity often involves leaps of thought that do not follow a clear or predictable pattern.
In relationships, AI can describe emotions and generate responses that appear empathetic, but love, friendship, sacrifice, morality, and sincerity are far more complex than logical expressions. Human relationships involve layers of meaning that cannot always be captured through visible signs or data patterns.
The article also highlights three Greek concepts of love: agape, eros, and philia. These represent different dimensions of human connection, from self-sacrificial love to romantic love and friendship. AI may imitate the language of these emotions, but it does not truly experience them.
AI and the future of Gen Z
Gen Z should not simply fear artificial intelligence. Instead, they need to strengthen the forms of intelligence that AI cannot easily replace: emotional intelligence, practical intelligence, and imaginative intelligence, while still developing analytical intelligence.
Many Gen Z workers want jobs that provide space for balance, self-expression, creativity, flexibility, and technology. Their struggle may not only come from a lack of job opportunities, but also from a mismatch between traditional workplaces and the way this generation wants to work.
Companies that reject technology, enforce rigid rules, and limit creativity may find it difficult to attract or retain Gen Z talent. This generation often prefers work that allows them to combine all four types of intelligence rather than only following routines, rules, and numerical targets.
Key leadership reflection questions
- Are we only valuing analytical intelligence, or are we also developing emotional, practical, and creative intelligence?
- How can companies design work that allows people to adapt, imagine, and build meaningful relationships?
- Are workplace systems helping Gen Z grow, or are they forcing them into outdated ways of working?
- What types of human intelligence should organizations protect and strengthen in the age of AI?
Closing thought
AI may be faster and more accurate in processing information, but human intelligence is broader. Humans combine logic, emotion, imagination, values, relationships, and lived experience. This combination makes human intelligence more complete than artificial intelligence.
Make it a good day!
